Past APAC President & current Social Media Chair Viet Le, MPAS, PA-C FACC FAHA and APAC Board Member and Chair of our Preventive Cardiology Committee John Giacona, PhD, PA-C, CHC sighting at AHA2023, spreading the word about PAs in Cardiology!
LATE BREAKING TRIAL HIGHLIGHTS FROM JOHN:
ESPRIT Trial - "Effects of Intensive Blood Pressure Lowering Treatment in Reducing Risk of Cardiovascular Events"
Key results/take-aways: In participants at increased CV risk, intensive BP lowering to a systolic BP target of <120 mmHg reduced major CV events by 12%, CV mortality by 39%, and all-cause mortality by 21% at 3 years compared to standard treatment (systolic BP goal of <140 mmHg). This study validates the findings of the previous SPRINT trial and extends those findings by including participants with DM or history of stroke (which were excluded in SPRINT). Importantly, the effects demonstrated by ESPRIT were consistent regardless of diabetes status (Type 1, Type 2 or none) or history of stroke. Note: These findings were presented at AHA Scientific Sessions 2023. AHA ESPRIT Learn more HERE
CRHCP Trial -"Effectiveness of Blood Pressure Lowering Intervention on Risk of Total Dementia Among Patients with Hypertension"
Key results/take-aways: In patients with hypertension, intensive BP lowering to a target of <130/80 mmHg significantly reduced all-cause dementia by 15% and cognitive impairment without dementia by 16% at 48 months compared to usual care group (without increasing injurious falls or syncope). Note: These findings were presented at AHA Scientific Sessions 2023. AHA CRHCP Learn more HERE
