PAD News

In observance of National PAD Month, we hope to make this an important month to kick off an increased awareness of PAD testing.
Peripheral artery disease (PAD) is a leading - and preventable - cause of death in the United States. If affects nearly 20 million Americans, and 200,000 of them - disproportionately from minority communities - suffer avoidable amputations every year.

PAD is the worst form of CLI and more awareness in all of our communities will help us meet our mission of "ending amputations and death due to CLI."

In the next five years, one in four of your patients with Peripheral Artery Disease will suffer a heart attack, stroke, amputation, or death.

You can change this outcome with the latest prevention, detection, and treatment strategies.

APAC Co-Chairman of the PAD Committee

The American College of Cardiology offers more info at Peripheral Artery Disease: Optimizing Treatment Strategies, to help providers identify signs and symptoms of PAD, develop treatment plans, and better understand the prevalence of PAD.

Additionally, Cardio Smart's PAD Condition Center provides tools and resources to share with patients so that they can better understand their condition and facilitate shared decision-making conversations between patients and providers.

APAC is a proud Cosponsor of  H.R. 4261, the Amputation Reduction and Compassion (ARC) Act

To address PAD, Congressman Payne, Jr. has introduced the Amputation Reduction and Compassion (ARC) Act of 2023, which would:
  • Create a peripheral artery disease (PAD) education program through the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).
  • Establish coverage for PAD screening of at-risk beneficiaries under Medicare and Medicaid.
  • Require the HHS Secretary to consult with organizations to establish standards for PAD screening tests.
  • Develop a voluntary pilot program to support nontraumatic, lower-limb, major amputation prevention, including through patient risk modification and management, early screening and detection, surveillance, testing, and treatment for PAD.
